Blog, Blog, Blog

This blog is basically a journal for "keeping track" of my work as I create it. I'll post pictures, sketches and any updates or info I feel is necessary to the process as I go from start to finished pieces.

Going back...

This is a shark mural that I started for my brother in his room a reaaal long time ago. I was looking at it with him this past weekend and we decided he's waited long enough for me to finish it so I need to go buy some paints and get to work!

Process: "One Touch At A Time"

This is a clip from my process performance piece for ceramic structures. I edited the original 10 minutes of footage in Final Cut Pro by removing clips, including text, changing speeds, repeating clips, and adding 4 transitions.

Babies and Glazes

Today I loaded 3 of my baby sculptures into the bisque kiln. After their bisqued, I'm going to choose one or more glazes to put on them. I'm thinking of using either one of the mottled purples or one of the amber browns and a green. I'm going to fire them on stilts so that they can be glazed all the way around.
These are the results of my 3 Triaxial Blends:
1- Manganese, Cobalt Oxide, and Vanadium
2-Cobalt Oxide, Black Copper Oxide, Iron Oxide
3- Chrome Oxide, Cobalt Oxide, and Ilmenite

Tiles for Midterm Crit

Here's my glazed tiles before and after they were installed for my midterm crit. They colors came out darker/more saturated than expected, which I think actually worked out for the better. It also seems like there was some reduction effects to the insides of the clay frames in the firing from the stains and it turned a brownish, burnt color that's really nice. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way these ones came out and I think for the next ones I start I might try gold leafing the frames, making them bigger, or even removing the frames and painting the surface and the sides with glaze like a canvas...going to experiment a little.

Not too much

Sooo this week is spring break. I'd usually be home on Long Island at this time, but I'm still at Temple for training with the fencing team since we have NCAA Regionals on Saturday. I managed to stop by the studio yesterday and made a triaxial blend glaze for my test tiles for porcelain. I used vanadium, manganese and cobalt to make a gradient between the 3 colors. I think I'll end up with yellow-greens, grey-blues and hopefully some purples. Whichever glaze I chose will go on the fetus babies I'm making for my porcelain midterm crit. I'll post a pic of those when they're done.

Babies

These are my fetus babies. I'm making them for my porcelain class out of a cone 10 epsom salt porcelain body. They are hollow and hand built. I'm going to make one for each stage of fetal development. Originally I was planning on making them really refined and scientific looking, but after working with the porcelain and running into a few snags I took a different approach and started making them more deformed and creepy looking. At first I wanted to keep them unglazed, but now that they are taking on a different look and tone I think I want to use an oxide wash or some sort of darker glaze that will go with the crudeness of their forms and bring out the abnormalities.

Here's one of my tiles. There are 4 so far and they are in the in kiln being bisqued at the moment. On Sunday I'll glaze them with a clear and fire them to cone 06. The colors should get much darker and the little details will be more apparent after the glaze fire. Excited to see the final product!

Some Inspiration

Charles Timm Ballard is an artist who's tile work I'm interested in his because of his choice of color palette and the way he simplifies nature scenes in his painting on ceramics. Here's a link to see some of his work-http://accessceramics.org/results/artist/80/

New Ideas

This is a tile piece I made last spring from a photo I took in Italy. It's made of a red clay body, underglaze with stains and clear glaze (this is a photo from before it was framed). My favorite part was the left top corner of sky and I'm using that as a jumping point for my work this semester. I'm making a series painted tiles from aerial photos I took in North Carolina.
